The Belarussian American entrepreneur, author, speaker and Internet personality gained his success as a wine critic who grew his family’s wine business from a mere $3 million-dollar entity to a $60 million-dollar business, but since then he has become internet famous for his brash and up front attitude about everything, including the business world.

His story goes back to working at his dad’s liquor store in Springfield, Mass, which was simply an everyday liquor shop called Shoppers Discount Liquors. But with a bit of Internet marketing, Vaynerchuk was able to create a unique brand for the store, creating an online wine business out of it.

Then in 2006, Vaynerchuk took his wine knowledge and marketing skills to the next level and launched Wine Library TV, which was a web video series where he talked about wines and more.

It was a barebones Internet series that included a shaky camera and a super casual feel, but it helped him become viral in the wine space. As his series grew bigger, he expanded its content and started to feature wine experts, celebrities and friends on the shows, which only helped him more notoriety in the space.

But like any Internet celebrity, it started to become less about wine and more about Vaynerchuk, which is where his critics accused him of dumbing down the appreciation for wine, which was what the original concept was about and making the series more about him as a celebrity.

By then, the show was more about forming an online identity as he discussed topics like career advice, branding and other business-related things, garnering him more media attention and a book deal for motivational business titles.

With the success of his books, Vaynerchuk then launched his speaking career, which is a huge staple of his business. Because of his massive social media following, his speaking engagements consist of topics like self-branding which often sellout crowds as his persuasive flair is what keeps his followers engaged and coming back for more.

While his web series ended in 2011, he does still have regular #AskGaryVee videos in which he answers questions from Twitter on things like branding, social marketing, career advancement and more. Although Twitter is his social media platform of choice, he knows that he has to be present on all of them, with his IG approach of selfies and short inspiration words that are real and raw.

Just because he’s gained massive success doesn’t mean he’s loved by every one. While many appreciate how blunt he is and his over-the-top personality, others think he’s merely seeking attention, overexposing himself just to continue and grow his celebrity prowess. However, with true entrepreneuarial sprit, Vaynerchuk continues to thrive and grow his brand.

He even launched VaynerMedia, a digital marketing media agency where he advises brands on things like marketing, branding and more – something he’s an expert in!

His agency doesn’t just attract small names, but has worked with huge Fortune 500 companies like Unilever, GE and more.

On a blog post on his site, Vaynerchuk admits that his success is due in part to “some level of skill” and his ability to “out-work people.” To him, a person’s biggest advantage is their work ethic, which is what helped propel him to become such a successful entrepreneur!
